I heard the slightest bit of squeaking from my brakes this morning and got to thinking... I’ve never replaced the brakes on the SUV. Never. I’ve called and made an appointment to have them looked at. You think 90k miles on the same brake pads is a record? Hope things aren’t too messed up.

What’s a break pad? Is that like an area set up for break dancing?

I have 67k miles on the brakes in my Cruze... granted it’s a lot lighter than an SUV, but I got nervous, so I bought pads, pulled the calipers, and they were fine. Like 1/2 the meat was still on them. So now I’m aiming to break 100k on the original pads.

do you drive a lot of highway miles?

It’s on the upper end of reasonable. If you just heard a squeak it should just be the wear indicator warning you that it is time.

I was wondering if it was unusual or not, so I started googleing around. This is a small SUV (Escape) but it’s my daily freeway driver and all that stuff. The guy I called said he didn’t even think it sounded like they need replacing. We’ll see tomorrow.

Just make sure you get a low dust break pad, to keep your clothes as fresh as your moves.

Yes, it’s just a slight squeak and I’ve only heard it a few times as I come to a stop, most times I still hear nothing. I do a lot of freeway driving for sure, 45 minute commute to and fro work.

90k is reasonable then. It is probably only the fronts.

You might be able to easily see for yourself if you crank the wheels all the way to one side and stick your head in. Either way though it’s probably time for new pads.

Thats pretty good. IME, the front pads on GM trucks and SUVs last a long time. Ive seen stock pads on trucks with 150k. Rears not so much.

Brakes are totally worthless, all they do is slow you down.
